ABSTRACT

Living Shoreline implementation involves a three-step process, including screening criteria, site suitability, and design and construction. The screening process evaluates the potential impacts of a project on critical resources or conditions that can preempt or significantly restrict the opportunity for the construction of a Living Shoreline. The Site Suitability Review gauges the applicability of Living Shoreline techniques at a particular site. It takes into account all of the physical, geological, and biological parameters that must be considered to effectively establish a Living Shoreline. Storm surge is one of the most critical factors in designing a Living Shoreline because it dictates the level of protection desired for a site. Bank height describes the height of the upland bank landward of the shoreline. The tide range at the site is a critical parameter in designing a Living Shoreline. Once a Living Shoreline is constructed and planted, another issue that may be encountered is grazing on the planted plants by Canada geese.
