ABSTRACT

Tocotrienols represent one half of the vitamin E family, yet are vastly overshadowed by tocopherols in research. Tocotrienols exhibit unique biological functions that are not exhibited by tocopherols. Tocotrienols possess powerful antioxidant, neuroprotective, and cerebrovascular protective properties, making them ideal candidates to protect against ischemic stroke. These properties also allow them to be protective against cognitive deficits and cancer. Tocotrienols are naturally available and abundant in readily available commercial products like palm oil. Since tocotrienols are not a drug, but rather a safe nutrient, related research is easily adaptable to a clinical setting to further analyze their role in the treatment and prevention of brain injury.
