ABSTRACT

This chapter illustrates the Big Data Analytics (BDA) concepts using structured data generated by a sensor installed on the buses. It presents a case illustration through two aspects: first, the transformation of raw data to usable data, and second, reflections about the development of the BDA process. In the context of public bus transportation systems (PBTS), strategic risk refers to the variation in efficiency and effectiveness of operations of the PBTS that are designed to enable sustainable transportation in cities. Improving strategic intelligence in the PBTS requires development of an efficiency-sustainability measurement system that recognizes all three dimensions of the PBTS business definition. The BDA process is in itself a human–machine interactive approach, in which the sensors transmit data that are analyzed by humans, who then make decisions about how to adjust the PBTS. Therefore, the overall BDA process includes problem definition; data capture and organization; data exploration; interpretation of results; and knowledge transfer, application, and feedback.
