ABSTRACT

Data are supposed to be used in the service of accomplishing business goals. This chapter introduces a framework that establishes links between an organization's business goals and its information system (IS). The framework relies on the User Requirements Notation (URN) and jUCMNav, a free Eclipse-based tool for analyzing and managing URN models, to model business scenarios, the stakeholders involved, their intentions in terms of organizational objectives, tasks they perform, and the IS that supports these objectives. The chapter describes the overall mapping process and then concludes with an applied scenario from a public-sector organization in which a portion of its business objectives was mapped to underlying data sources. Moreover, the linkages between and among the data sources, tasks to be done, and goals related to those tasks are also explicitly modeled. It is difficult to manage data well without having a good understanding of the value of the data sources being developed or maintained.
