ABSTRACT

Chapter 16 discusses six case studies of rock slope design and stabilisation. Case 1 involves planar stability in granite where the stabilisation selected was to unload the crest of the slope. Case 2 involves a cut face in granite containing persistent sheet joints that was stabilised with cable bolts. Case 3 involves a wedge in a bridge abutment that was stabilised with tensioned cable anchors. Case 4 involves a toppling failure that was stabilised by trim blasting of the upper slabs, and installing rock bolts. Case 5 involves excavation of a slope with a potential circular failure to create a rock fall catch ditch. Case 6 involves a circular stability in weak volcanic deposits that was stabilised with soil nails, shotcrete and drain holes.
