ABSTRACT

This chapter provides a comprehensive survey on the evolving map of wireless communication networks covering the evolution of their basic principles of operation, and their architectures, from first-generation wireless networks to Fifth-generation wireless networks and beyond. It summarizes the evolution of the wireless generations, indicating the great advances that have so far been achieved in wireless communications in general. The chapter discusses the future developing trend of wireless communication networks. The basic mechanism behind wireless networking is that signals can be carried by electromagnetic waves that are further transmitted to a signal receiver. The chapter describes conceptual 5G wireless networks, in terms of service rates, delays, and frequencies. In addition 5G networks will also need to meet the needs of new use cases such as the Internet of Things (IoT) as well as broadcast-like services and lifeline communication in times of natural disaster.
