ABSTRACT

This chapter attempts to fill in the possible gaps in the literature by providing readers with detailed information that they can use to help them make solid ad hoc decisions. It provides office-level leaders with some tips they can utilize to help them create game plans for dealing with the most common unplanned occurrences that take place in their departments. The chapter delineates six mental maps that administrators should develop. They can tap into the information in these internal constructs to help them make the right ad hoc choices. The six mental maps include having a firm grasp of one's self-interests, obligations, ethical beliefs, and legacy-related desires; knowing the ins and outs of the workplace; and understanding the employee manual. They also include thinking through the ways in which the organization's mission, vision, and values applies to the administrator's particular department; planning for ad hoc events that occur most often; and maintaining a continuous improvement mind-set.
