ABSTRACT

Motion is a very distinctive way of creating hierarchy because it not only highlights through movement but also through form, color, and even sound. This is why motion pictures are popular, because they serve to entertain the viewer. Though interfaces do not interact with users in completely the same manner, motion in parts of the interface is needed to interact and communicate with the user. The innovation and fluidity of motion should become part of interfaces by creating a balance between the content and the design. Motions or animations should not be overwhelming. They should neither take all the attention from the menu nor serve as a distraction. The gesture technology for interfaces has improved and will soon supersede the mouse and keyboard. Many user interface (UI) designers take the option to create fully animated prototypes using animation software like After Effects. This does not suit all prototypes but may be valuable on a case-by-case basis.
