ABSTRACT

Extensive research has resulted in the development of several incineration technologies. This chapter highlights comprehensive state-of the-art techniques for remediation, reduction, and prevention of Dioxins and Furans. Dioxins enter into the environment mainly from flue gas and formation of fly ash originating from incineration and combustion processes, and Dioxins contaminated soil due to industrial sources. Rollins Rotary Kiln Incinerator owned by Rollins, Inc., located in Deer Park, Texas is used to dispose hazardous waste. The removal of particle-bound Dioxins from waste gas coming from an iron ore sintering plant with a cloth filter yielded a reduction of the Dioxins up to 73 percent. Thermal treatment is a process by which heat is applied to the waste in order to sanitize it. A method of selective catalytic reduction for the NOx gases can be also applied for the Dioxins remediation. The dechlorination method is to destroy or detoxify hazardous chlorinated molecules through gradual, but progressive replacement of chlorine by other atoms.
