ABSTRACT

Effective environment health and safety (EH&S) practices in conjunction with sound Lean practices can help organizations gain a competitive advantage in the business in which they compete. EH&S programs focus on all aspects of human health in the workplace and protection of the environment. Key areas of an effective environment safety and health EH&S program include the following: environment protection, worker safety and health (WSH), medical care, EH&S training and radiation protection-where applicable. An effective EH&S program has an objective with a documented strategy that is designed to prevent accidents, occupational illness and injuries, and prevent negative impacts to the environment. Corporate leaders who are actively engaged in ensuring that the EH&S program is effective in recognizing that the cost of an effective program is a necessary expense. On the other hand, some leaders are skeptical of the value that the EH&S program brings to the company's portfolio and will contribute as little resources as possible to support the program.
