ABSTRACT

This chapter presents a case study on estimating the value of hydrometeorological information in Austria. It employs several methods published in the literature and applied earlier for other countries. The derived Austrian estimates are based on the transfer of foreign willingness-to-pay assessments and adjustments of foreign sectoral-based benefit estimates. The obtained value of weather information in Austria estimated for households, agriculture, transport, and construction sectors ranges within several hundred million Euros per year. The wide range of obtained estimates for Austria unveils the uncertainties associated with the assessments published for other countries and also highlights the challenges pertinent to the problem of assessing the value of weather information.
