ABSTRACT
This chapter on in situ sensors focuses on the role that in situ data play in generating valuable information for society. Four domains are presented to provide perspectives on different characteristics of in situ monitoring, including land and water, climate and atmosphere, oceans and coast, and economy and society. These four categories are also represented in a number of international initiatives, including the 2030 objectives and associated Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
