ABSTRACT

Geospatial data and related information resources are valuable assets that require investments in skills and infrastructure. They often record measurements of observations that cannot be replicated and serve as cultural artifacts that have captured representations of a particular time and location. This chapter provides a brief overview of recommended practices for enabling the reuse of geospatial information such as geospatial data, maps, systems, products, and services. It addresses stewardship activities throughout the data lifecycle, which facilitate the reuse for new purposes, such as scientific research, education, planning, and policy-making. Processes are suggested, that engage both the creators of source data and potential user communities, and digital repositories, such as scientific archives. Intellectual property rights associated with potential reuse material are addressed. An example demonstrates how the value of geospatial information products and services can be attained through curation and dissemination.
