ABSTRACT

This chapter delves into the challenges of small projects and their benefits, and ways to work within the construct of an organization created for larger projects. Small projects allow new ideas to incubate to form new technologies while accepting a level of risk that is unacceptable to large programs. Much of the framework used to organize successful small projects is the same as that used for large projects, but streamlined. The project plan should also define the scope of the project from the very beginning. Once initiation is complete and planning is ready to proceed, a kick-off meeting with the key stakeholders is in order so that everyone understands the marching orders and also sees that the organization is notified of the concepts of the streamlined approach. Practicing risk management is critically important to the success of small projects.
