ABSTRACT

In the permanent search of optimizing the way of measuring health-related phenomena, there might be a few good reasons for developing a new instrument. An emerging concept, some progresses in taxonomy, the redefinition of the paradigm in which a phenomenon has to be captured, or simply unsatisfactory measurement properties of existing measures are some of these reasons. A comprehensive assessment of activity limitations in daily activities is essential in the management of hip and knee osteoarthritis (OA). The Animated Activity Questionnaire (AAQ) is easily trans-culturally applicable because only a minimal translation of instructions is required. This is a clear advantage over self-report questionnaires. With innovative potential of e-health technology, new ways of measuring health may become possible, implying individual participation, either actively or passively, through automated systems. This may generate a huge amount of data collected out of health professionals view, in real-life situations.
