ABSTRACT

Worldbuilding is made up of history, cultures, locations, environmental narrative, religions, magic/technology/science systems, and languages. The way players experience worldbuilding is by reading informational text, lore, and flavor text. While the graphics may not be photorealistic and one may not get as many locations and levels to design, he/she can still communicate information about the world through the environment. Through environmental narrative, the world expresses to the player different types of information about itself. An important aspect to remember about worldbuilding is that it's not just visual. Story of Dorothy has a few animation and sound assets to go along with its visuals. Sometimes worldbuilding can explain the gameplay itself. Whether the game is 2D or 3D or has no art assets at all, smart narrative design creates worlds that are believable and tangible for players. Traditional worldbuilding techniques, such as environmental narrative in level design, sounds, and background art, are all effective in mobile and social games.
