Virtual reality (VR), or the simulation of an actual physical presence in a virtual world, has been in the works for a long time. Stanley Weinbaum’s 1935 science-fiction novel Pygmalion’s Spectacles described a goggle-based device able to immerse its wearer in an alternative dimension, and the term was first adopted as early as 1938 in Antonin Artaud’s book Le Theatre et son double to describe the illusionary nature of characters in a theatrical setting.
