ABSTRACT

This chapter encompasses the fundamental thrust of security, dealing with risks, threats, and hazards. It describes how private security operates in the world of risk management and provides for a safe and secure environment, and outlines which methods for prediction and mitigation of risk are the most suitable. It defines a threat, its scope, types, and categories, and then distinguish between the natural and man-made varieties of risk, and summarizes how to identify risk, how to assess its impact, and how to track its influence. The chapter relates the most effective means of planning and preparing for risk. It discusses the similarities and differences between threats and hazards, and recognizes the four basic categories of weapons of mass destruction. The chapter lists the various threats and vulnerabilities that exist to software, hardware, and information technology.
