ABSTRACT

This chapter exposes both sides of the definition of physical security with its dual emphasis on physical means and methods, which protect assets and individuals as well as the place or locale where this precious cargo, both tangible and human, find themselves stationed. It outlines the two levels of physical security, both interior and exterior, and defines physical security and perimeter protection and list common crime risks in the physical environment. The chapter lists the various types of interior security applications from doors to access control. Recall the many purposes for video surveillance, stating the steps to successful surveillance and summarize the importance of surveillance. It identifies the equipment used in video surveillance and identifies the best equipment for each circumstance, and discusses the theory of crime prevention through environmental design (CPTED) and how it is implemented in crime prevention. The chapter evaluates the usefulness of both natural and structural barriers in crime prevention and illustrates their appropriate uses.
