ABSTRACT

This chapter examines numerical simulation by Volume of Fluid (VOF) and experimental measurement on sloshing in the prismatic LNG tank, focusing on free surface motions and pressure prediction. A numerical technique based on VOF method is introduced to study the sloshing problem in a prismatic LNG tank. The effective prediction of the impact pressure is the key issue for tank sloshing problem. Non-linear kinematic free surface conditions are adopted in the analysis of liquid sloshing. The profile of liquid surface is reconstructed in each time step by a scalar function of the volume of fluid, on the basis of the VOF method. Two typical filling levels in a tank are considered in numerical simulations and model experiments to study the features of liquid sloshing and have a comparison between simulation and experiment. The comparison between numerical simulation and experimental test shows that the present method is available to capture the impact sloshing pressure.
