ABSTRACT

The Conclusion summarizes the key arguments of the book, focussing on the similarities and differences among the case studies. This chapter reviews how the idea of the Vietnamese nation is increasingly embedded in the sphere of ordinary living. Thanks to the work of popular television, national formation becomes more deeply entwined with the individualized sphere of homemaking and is increasingly associated with intimate stories of self-formation. This chapter also highlights the resistance and complicity between sovereign and governmental power, emphasizing how these two modalities of power are more compatible than antithetical in the context of post-Reform marketization. This Conclusion confirms the pertinence of nationalism in Vietnam, while reveals how such pertinence deviates from previous norms of warfare patriotism.
