ABSTRACT

Since the second half of the 1990s Zoltán Gyenge has undoubtedly been the most prolific writer in the field of Hungarian Kierkegaard research. His monograph Kierkegaard's Life and Philosophy is his most comprehensive work on Kierkegaard and is based on his dissertation submitted to the Hungarian Academy of Sciences for the degree of doctor scientiarum in 2005. In accordance with its title, the work consists of two major parts, namely, that of Biographia and Philosophia. As regards the style of the work, it is characteristic that Gyenge consistently combines his scholarly research with a personal, passionate, subjective reliving of Kierkegaard in an original manner. The first chapter contains a detailed biography, which is divided into six stages. The second chapter is dedicated to the issue of Romanticism. Although Kierkegaard heard only some of these lectures, he certainly got acquainted with the basic thoughts of the late Schelling, which later influenced the genesis of his concept of existence.
