ABSTRACT

This chapter provides a clear picture of the audio programmer's role and his day-to-day work. It begins by getting an understanding of audio in video game development. Different areas are established from the audio in video game development and different subjects of audio programming is broken down. Games that don't take time to provide sound variations for certain common events risks boredom. Hearing the same sound over and over again becomes very frustrating and makes simply turn off the sound completely. One thing that often gets overlooked when dealing with dialogue is subtitles and localization. Although localization happens at the end of a production, it ideally starts the localization process before the game is finished. While a customized audio engine certainly provides value for the right game, audio middleware engines are great tools for audio programmers, and prevents to reinvent the wheel each time to start on a new project.
