ABSTRACT

This chapter presents the case study of Julie. Julie looked at every practice as a chance to measure herself against her own potential. Julie had an unusual talent for running. Long-legged and experienced, Julie’s endurance and capacity for speed were undeniable and drew attention, from her physical education teacher and then from her middle-school track coach. Julie was deeply satisfied to be asked to run on the middle-school cross country team. As expected, Julie’s parents were thrilled with her invitation to join the middle-school track team. Julie had always been an agreeable, bright, and untroubled kid. A good listener, Julie appreciated her friends’ struggles with their brothers, sisters, parents, and love interests. Julie secretly admired the older track athletes in her school. Julie was sensitive to her coach’s criticism and harshness because she was a perfectionist and because she was starting to starve herself.
