ABSTRACT

This chapter introduces the theme, subject and book’s objectives, some essential considerations regarding the broader economic, political and geo-political contexts in which Romanian industrial management should be considered, and the book’s structure. It is argued here that the particular aspects described in the book have attracted less attention in the academic literature so far. The chapter’s sub-sections attempt to address Romania’s economic backwardness and its significance in the shaping of the strategies for economic and industrial development, the specific characteristics of the ruling Romanian Communist Party, and the influence of the Soviet Union in Romanian industrialisation and industrial management.
