ABSTRACT

This chapter argues that the story of lustration process played, indeed, the crucial role in the past decade. It tries to answer the question, into what extent the story of lustrations was successful regarding shaping of political discourse over this issue. The chapter approaches the issue of lustration using the concept of Erinnerungsgeschichte that allows focusing on the lustration regarding context instead individual actors. It defines the concept of Erinnerungsgeschichte and its possible use in the lustration debate, aiming to explore how this concept explains framing the public debate with its consequences such as national identity and unity shaping tool. The chapter explains the basic elements of the Czech context of the debate – how did the perception of this issue develop within public discourse; how is the term lustration explained; and finally, what role did lustrations play in past 25 years, with an emphasis on politics.
