ABSTRACT

Psychoanalysis is also the field that can account for the commodification of being qua power-of-self-actualization in terms that go beyond the subjugation of being to value. Biopower operates by fulfilling religious functions in apparently secular ways, and serves the same main function as ideology, namely: while ideology or biopolitics may not directly serve the accumulation of value, they are the underside required for sustaining the system of the accumulation of value. Biopolitics, therefore, does not signal the end of ideology but rather is its late capitalist version, the one that corresponds to the dominance of the market, as opposed to the state. However, as the authors shall presently see, this historical difference entails that even as biopolitics is ideology, it has to be differentiated from the classical notion of ideology. With the shift from ideology to fetishism, the authors pass from the question of domination to the problematic of "subjection".
