ABSTRACT

This chapter illustrates the social reality of racism and considers its definition, and discusses the aims and objectives of Racism Awareness Training (RAT). It also discusses problems associated with the evaluation of the efficacy of RAT. An appreciation of the nature of racism is essential if the aims, methods and efficacy of RAT are to be understood and subject to the critical scrutiny that any form of training requires. Course aims, objectives and methods of delivery for specified groups should be made explicit by all RAT trainers. In a democracy, public knowledge is of the essence. Any group unwilling to make public and open to debate its purposes and methods is likely to come under suspicion. There are many ways of combating racism. Tolerance by Racism Awareness Education (RAE) course providers of a variety of approaches would probably be mutually beneficial in achieving the general aims and objectives that they have in common.
