ABSTRACT

We explain how the review of development plans includes examining documentation of archaeological, historical, and other resources of social or cultural value. For example, areas sacred to Native Americans may include sites used for harvest of traditional foods or medicines. Urban cultural sites & parks are a consideration and communities work towards social and natural resource sustainability. We address questions such as: How does the Section 106 process and the National Register affect development? What is a Phase I archaeological investigation, and when is it required? What is a cultural resources survey? When is the expertise of archaeologists, historians, architects, and other resource specialists warranted?
