ABSTRACT

This chapter provides the reader with an outline of the issues and factors to consider when studying the negative impact of exercise and/or adverse effects of involvement in sport. It: presents reasons for why it is important to study the negative impacts of exercise; suggests issues to be considered when researching the negative impact of exercise, signposting readers to examples of research in this area; presents a scenario on ethical and legal issues and suggests five research questions on the negative impact of exercise. It also provides a worked example, based on bullying in sport, as an illustration of the methodologies that can be used to study the bad things in sport and exercise.
