ABSTRACT

Chronic diseases are the leading cause of morbidity and mortality worldwide, and will become more prevalent in years to come. Physical activity is a well-tolerated, accessible and safe intervention to help manage these conditions; however, physical activity levels are typically low in adults with chronic diseases. Understanding how physical activity can help to manage chronic diseases more efficiently, and provide adults living with chronic disease an improved quality of life, is a pressing research need. This chapter describes ethical and practical issues that should be considered when undertaking research with chronic disease populations. Methods of recruitment and data collection that are commonly applied in physical activity research focusing on chronic disease populations are presented.
