ABSTRACT

This chapter provides a holistic overview of the broader questions and challenges that should shape the tenor of research on digital piracy in the future. It is intended to provoke questions not only about the state of research, but also the landscape of public policy regarding intellectual property as a whole. The increasing prominence of streaming presents a double edged sword for artists and copyright holders. Streaming was born of a desire to combat digital piracy, though M. Mulligan expects that streaming will lead to consumers engaging with music less frequently. K. F. Steinmetz and Pimental explain that the focus of research has been to reduce piracy to individual factors, such as low self-control, in the process ignoring broader contexts; political, economic and social circumstances surrounding piracy are specifically singled out, and gaps in these areas are apparent.
