ABSTRACT

This part introduction presents an overview of the key concepts discussed in the subsequent chapters. The part discusses postcolonial theory for data analysis. It examines the intersection of education and politics through a postcolonial analytical lens. The part explores how Black and Latinx students are represented and others in political discourse that was intended as educational opportunities for Students of Color. It shows how to use postcolonial theory as an analytical tool to understand the multiple meanings and purposes of language, particularly in how Black and Latinx youth are represented in current school choice discourse. The part highlights how the "concepts of discourse, representation, and 'othering' allow researchers to interrogate the type of language used by participants, how it is used, why it is used, and its implications". It addresses the work challenges of Black women through a critical discourse analysis of a popular hashtag.
