ABSTRACT

This chapter presents a study that responds to the call for further research at the classroom level to support the growing theoretical debate on the pedagogical implications of Global Englishes research. It aims to provide a clearer understanding of students' attitudes, what GELT may look like and the extent to which GELT may influence students' attitudes towards English and ELT. Ultimately, it aims to bridge the gap between theory and practice and help facilitate the movement towards GELT, particularly in contexts such as Japan, where there are increasing opportunities to use ELF. Given the abundance of studies that use single quantitative methods to investigate attitudes, this sequential mixed-methods research utilised questionnaires and interviews, as in Galloway. The questionnaire involved 116 students, comprising of 56 GE (4 removed for non-completion) and 60 non-GE (1 removed) students. Of the 120 students, 55 made comments that referred to 'native' English speakers being the legitimate users of the language.
