ABSTRACT

Public scholarship engages higher education faculty in advancing the public and civic purposes of humanities, arts, and social sciences. By collaborating with – and making research accessible to – community partners, scholars can make a tangible difference in the world. In doing so, they are designing innovative models, methodologies, and languages for scholarship; and integrating research with exciting teaching and community service approaches. Public research and scholarship are also becoming accepted modes of achieving tenure and promotion. This chapter explores current trends in public scholarship, and identifies and discusses specific sources and strategies for funding this kind of work.
