ABSTRACT

This chapter discusses the microbial assay of culture supernatant containing crude lipase, and determins antibacterial activity. The lipase-producing bacterial strains are subjected to the screening for antibacterial activity using different fungal strains. The strains are Escherichia coli, Staphylococcus aureus, Klebsiella pneumoniae, Bacillus subtilis, and Pseudomonas aeruginosa. Antibacterial activity of lipase-producing bacterial strains is evaluated by the well diffusion method. The chapter also determines antifungal activity. The lipase-producing bacterial strains are subjected to screening for antifungal activity using the different fungal strains. The fungal strains used here Candida albicans, and Fusarium oxysporum. Antifungal activity of lipase-producing bacterial strains is evaluated by the well diffusion method. The culture supernatant containing crude lipases from the culturable bacterial strain KBS-101 inhibited growth of both Gram-positive and Gramnegative bacteria. The chapter concludes that the crude lipases from KBS-101 and KBS-105 inhibited the growth of fungal strains which might degrade the fungal cell wall.
