ABSTRACT

We all rely on imagination when undertaking new projects – architects particularly so, with their potential to imagine perhaps being their most essential creative asset. Sally Weintrobe argues that neoliberal culture is damaging to the caring creative imagination, and because of this, it is vital to understand more about this culture, its aims and its effects. She calls it a culture of uncare, as it aims to uncare us – in other words, to uncouple us from the part of us that cares in a feeling way about reality. Resilience is being able to withstand the pressure of this culture to unduly influence how we think and feel, and also to understand how and why we collude with a culture that currently promotes such extensive disavowal of climate change, of environmental degradation and of social suffering. She explores the psychology of imagination, disavowal and the culture of uncare, and also what is needed for ‘the New Imagination’ that can envision a sustainable, more equable world.
