ABSTRACT

In this chapter, Irena Bauman interviews Tina Saaby about her experiences as Copenhagen’s City Architect. For the last eight years, she has been developing strategies to make public life in the city more vibrant, sustainable and resilient in the face of climate change. The projects discussed include Urban Life, an urban strategy that aims to ensure the quality of outdoor life for all and more diversity in outdoor spaces, Co-Creation Copenhagen, which focuses on urban nature, and the 2012 Cloudburst Strategy, a city-wide response to meet the impacts of rising sea levels and increased heavy rainfall. Here, she discusses the impacts of those strategies and the relationship between centralised planning and the neighbourhood, the expert and the citizens.
