ABSTRACT

This chapter describes positive embodiment, meaning, and yoga as a pathway to an embodied and meaningful life. It provides a framework in which the mind and body connection, a sense of purpose and meaning, and an overarching attitude and practice of loving-kindness are essential features of positive embodiment that can be found in yoga practice. Yoga can be a pathway to positive embodiment and support the prevention and treatment of eating disorders. Yoga practice provides active practice in being with and for the body and the self. In the practice of yoga, a practitioner can sense the muscles tension, reactivity, heart rate, and breath rate associated with stress as well as the release, down regulation, and deep breathing associated with deep relaxation. The use of yoga in the prevention of eating disorders is a fairly practice. Yoga as an adjunct of the treatment of eating disorders has emerged in the field of research on eating disorders.
