ABSTRACT

This chapter reviews the educational system of Kuwait, where the policy-makers emphasize the role of education; or, as stated by the Planning Board. The government of Kuwait considers highly qualified manpower to be one of the most important assets and many developed and underdeveloped countries, as well as Kuwait, are continually trying to increase their share of high-level manpower. In 1937, the Palestinian teachers arrived and public schools opened for the first time in Kuwait—both males and females. Kuwait, like many less developed countries, suffers from a shortage of teachers. Graduates from vocational and technical schools represent a small percentage of the total number of graduates from the various institutions in Kuwait. Although the oil companies provide housing for their employees in the city of Ahmadi, most Kuwaitis insist on staying neai Kuwait City. As indicated, most of the oil companies maintain on-the-job training programs.
