ABSTRACT

This chapter shows how rational emotive behaviour (REB) coaches help their coachees understand the emotional problems for which they are seeking coaching and to set goals in relation to these problems. Rational emotive behavioural coaching (REBC) is a structured and focused approach to coaching, it is advisable for REB coaches to allow coachees an extended opportunity to tell coaches about the problem in their own way before coaches begins to help the coachee to summarise the problem. After coachees have described their problem, coaches should ask them what their goal is in relation to this problem. The coach's objective is to help the coachee see that there is a healthy way of handling the adversity, which involves facing the adversity rather than bypassing it. When assessing a specific example of the coachee's emotional problem, a useful way to start is by describing the situation in which the problem occurred.
