ABSTRACT

This chapter argues that the coach will help the coachee deal with any emotional problem they have that, if not dealt with, will impede the development of a flexible mindset. Being able to stand back and look at things from different perspectives is a good sign that a coachee has a flexible mindset. Some coachees take a long-term perspective on their lives, while others take a short-term perspective. Another way to help the coachee to be pluralistic in outlook is to encourage them to use 'both–and' thinking rather than 'either–or' thinking. This helps protect the coachee from viewing the world in simplistic, discrete categories and encourages the coachee to develop flexible views for a complex world. The ability of the coachee to react constructively to the changing nature of their environment is both enhanced by a flexible mindset and itself enhances that mindset.
