ABSTRACT

This chapter discusses the 'Situational ABC' parts of the 'ABCDEF' framework used by rational emotive behaviour (REB) coaches to understand and deal with their coachees' emotional problems. The 'Situational ABC' aspects of the framework underpin the rational emotive behavioural coaching (REBC) conceptual scheme of the eight major emotional problems that are considered in coaching, as well as their healthy alternatives. An adversity is the aspect of the situation in which the emotional problem was experienced, about which the person was most disturbed. In REBC, when people hold basic attitudes towards adversities, they experience emotional, behavioural and thinking consequences of these attitudes. The type of consequences they will experience will depend on the type of attitudes they hold. In contrast, when coachees hold flexible/non-extreme attitudes regarding their coaching path not being smooth, they will set out on that path motivated by their desire to develop themselves and adequately prepared for any obstacles along the way.
