ABSTRACT

The challenge for leaders is to use differentiation and integration to develop organizations best suited to realizing the defined objectives. For the CEO, this task of organizational composition means developing the best possible company, but for everyone else this can mean taking on the responsibility for organizing at their own level. As these two organizational composition principles – unity and diversity – pull in opposite directions, leaders often emphasize one principle over the other. The integrative leadership style also allows leaders to shape a very distinct team profile. Federative leaders also recognize that in most cases there has been growth in the diversity of organizational activities. Switching to the federative leadership style, it can be said that its main quality is not building teams, but building coalitions – groups of people working together around certain interests that they share.
