ABSTRACT

One of the obliging shrubs is Erythrina crista-galli, the cockspur coral tree, common throughout South America but understandably rare in the UK. In many countries, children are treated badly and inappropriately, especially poor children. To say this risks imposing a particular view of childhood, since there are great differences in the way that parents and societies choose to bring up their children, and to be tolerant is to be generous. The struggle women face looking after young children, as mothers or in some other caring capacity, can also be a terrible burden, especially in those countries where even giving birth is a threat to life. The poor – especially poor working mothers with young children – were being pathologized for making very reasonable requests for childcare. Children were free to come and go between indoors and outside and to play and explore for large parts of the day – the nursery schools used to offer full-day sessions.
