ABSTRACT

Chapter 14 discusses the broader role of sustainability in supply networks taking a wider view than the traditional supply chain perspective. The chapter starts by outlining some of the core sustainability principles including ecological footprints, ecosystem services and the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals. The chapter also provides details of stakeholder management and specifically working with NGOs in supply networks to achieve sustainability goals. The role of supplier development is then examined, again with a specific focus on sustainability, with a link made to base of the pyramid issues in developing regions. The chapter finishes with a case study on Metsä Group’s approach to working with wood supply networks.
