ABSTRACT

Given the strategic importance of working with external quality standards, the European Foundation for Quality (EFQM) Excellence Model is one of the most important and best known models in the marketplace. Its long history and development has secured its place as a recognized globally applied model which when applied can cover many parts of a business or operation. Working with the model can lay the foundation for the way in which organizations might work with their internal management systems and processes, and it also helps to promote an environment where a strong focus is placed on finding the right way of doing things. In this chapter we consider the importance and contribution of this model to the field of quality improvement, and consider its application and perceived value. We also consider some of its global application by reviewing a few examples of how it has been replicated in many different countries around the world. A case study is offered as an example of how to work effectively with the model.
