ABSTRACT

In the Spanish context, growing citizen political mobilisation presents a series of objectives that are framed within the general monitoring process. Among the main aims set out by the various platforms and initiatives, to be examined throughout this chapter, are the following: 1) modifying the media and political agenda; 2) adding to the plurality of points of view; 3) promoting transparency; and, finally, 4) denouncing those responsible for the political and economic crises. These goals are shared by numerous active civil society groups. In promoting them, a series of initiatives have been designed to scrutinise the centres of power. The chapter then focuses on the following questions: How can the processes of citizen scrutiny be theoretically framed in contemporary political theory? What is the potential and novelty of the political monitoring process? What actors and processes make up this dynamic? The chapter the discusses theoretical framework of monitory democracy.
