ABSTRACT

The issue of deception in an online environment has been investigated by Friend and Fox Hamilton. They found that accurate deception detection in an online environment is different from offline communication based on individual differences in personality and trust levels. Previous offline deception detection methods have included measuring physiological responses during deception detection, such as polygraphs, galvanic skin response tests, and heart rate monitors to measure non-verbal or salient visual signs of physiological reactions in criminal investigations. When the participants were asked why they selected the topics that they believed they had been lied to in, sixteen themes were identified from 105 codes. Guillory and Hancock do state that there are negative consequences to finding out that something is untrue, like losing a relationship. This could be expanded to understand differences in experiences of being deceived online and offline, while this chapter only did a preliminary investigation to experiences of being lied to without distinguishing conversation medium.
