ABSTRACT

The pre- and post-harvest management strategies help to minimize the use of chemical pesticides and their toxicity to humans and beneficial organisms, and their effects on non-target species are being developed and implemented at various levels. Vegetables of different types have been monitored for the presence of organochlorine, organophosphorus and synthetic pyrethroid group of pesticides. The regulation of pesticide production and uses in India is governed by two separate bodies, namely the Central Insecticides Board (CIB) and Registration Committee (RC) and the Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI). Maximum residue limits are the upper legal levels of a concentration for pesticide residues in or on food or feed based upon good agricultural practices and to ensure the lowest possible consumer exposure. The acceptable daily intake is an estimate of the amount of a food additive, expressed on body weight basis that can be ingested daily over a lifetime without any appreciable health risk.
